Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwumi Ambode on Friday said no nation or state can achieve its full potential without adequate attention to matters of heritage and culture . Ambode made this statement at the maiden edition of the Rasheed Gbadamosi Eko Art Expo,noting that encouragement must be given to the teeming youthful population that sees and seeks opportunities in the creative industries.
The Governor of Lagos State in his address said his administration is devoted to various forms of Art, ‘Many people have acknowledged and celebrated our modest support to the musical art as well as the motion picture industry, particularly though our annual One Lagos Fiesta. But others have wondered if our intervention in the creative sector excludes the visual arts. This exhibition is our response to such well-meaning enquiries.
‘Creativity is the most valuable asset in any progressive society. Therefore, progressive governments must embrace creativity. We are committed, and we must reward contributors of creative ideas with incentives.
In due course, you will begin to see that our interest as well as our engagement with the art community started a while ago and is just about to bear good fruits. We have commissioned several artists to decorate various parts of our state with landmark installations, which are in addition to the six art theatres we shall open across the State before the end of this year. ‘
According to the Governor of Lagos State, the Rasheed Gbadamosi Art Expo is an important event in Lagos State because it seeks to appreciate the great talents that abound in the State while it immortalize the name of Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, an illustrious Lagos man, who served the state till the very end with his talent and passion .
Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Mr Steve Ayorinde who also spoke at the Art Expo said the exhibition is a mixture of the old and the new . Ayorinde noted that the Rasheed Gbadamosi Art Expo commences the celebration of Lagos at 50 event. The event is to enter its peak April 8, and will have celebrations for fifty days till May 27 when Lagos will clock 50.
According to Commissioner, several events have being lined up to make Lagos golden jubilee a successful one.There will be a world class press briefing towards that period to celebrate not just the Art of Lagos State but its economy which is the fifth largest in Africa.
