The Coalition of Northern Youth Associations (CNYA) met in Kaduna and called on all Northern Parliamentarians both returning and newly-elected to support the aspiration of Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 8th National Assembly.
They noted that since the North-east is poised to clinch the Senate Presidency, it is incumbent on Northern parliamentarians to rally round the candidate from the South-west geo political zone. The group noted that it was not out of place for the Speaker to emerge from the South-west, the same geo-political zone as the Vice President of the incoming government of MuhammaduBuhari.
Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the group’s National President, Comrade Abubakar Mohammed, said the South-west deserves to be well compensated for ensuring what he described as “landslide victory” for Buhari during the presidential poll.
The group said, “For the avoidance of doubt, every member of the House of Representatives has the inalienable right to contest for any leadership position in the House but let the truth be told, this time round, we need to separate the boys from the men.
“Nigeria deserves the best for the Speakership position and that gentleman, geo-political or ethnic considerations notwithstanding, is Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
“He represents the new face of the 8th House of Representatives. He, till date, holds sway as the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, never in the history of the House has the opposition displayed acidic verve, vibrancy, tenacity of purpose and strong superior positions than now that Hon. Gbajabiamila leads the Minority in the 7th House of Representatives.”
Adducing further reasons for the support of the House Minority Leader, the group added,” He represents the change the House of Representatives needs under this present situation.
“He is courageous and unblemished with a strong international connection, which will be an advantage to the House coupled with his jurisdictional experience would also be a plus for the incoming Buhari’s government.
“He believes in Legislature/Executive camaraderie and we believe this is what the Buhari government will need to effect the much-desired change in the country.
“He is the voice for the voiceless, as he has consistently defended the Nigerian masses on the floor of the lower chamber.
“In the light of the above, we crave the indulgence of all Northern parliamentarians both old and newly elected as well as the leadership of the All Progressive Congress to rally round and support the candidature of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.”
