NUBIFIE Crisis Deepens as Thugs Invade Union Office

By Okunade Adekunle

The crisis rocking the National Union of Banks, Insurance Companies and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) has taken a new dimension as Mr. Godwin Izuwa led group allegedly mobilised thugs to the Yaba Office of the union to forcefully take over from the sitting executives.

Following the failed attempt by the group to gain access to the office last week after arresting Comrade Danjuma-led executives and keeping them in Alagbon Police Division during the Easter period with the aim of taking over while they are away in police custody, the General Secretary, Comrade. Mohammed Sheihk, while addressing some journalists at the NUBIFIE Secretariat on Wednesday said,” after being released, we were told to report back today (Wednesday) along with them. As law abiding citizens, we went to report. Meanwhile, while we were there, they came here and forced their way in, molested the security men at the gate when they were supposed to report with us at the police station.

“You won’t believe that none of these people except for one is a member of this union. In fact, the hatched-man, Mr. Izuwa, belongs to ASBIFIE, the union body for the senior staff, that’s where he pays his check-off dues. I can show you the evidence, so these are jobless people who just want to destabilise the union because they have nothing to lose if the union is proscribed”.

When asked why the union has not organised the delegate conference for the emergence of new executives, Sheihk said there were some pre- delegate conference preparation that needed to be done like elections in all the 36 states of the federation to elect the delegates that will elect the new officers, stating that they were almost through with it as they have only one or two state left.

He said immediately they are done with all necessary preparations, the union will conduct the delegate conference.

“We are not saying we won’t conduct delegate conference, but enough is enough, we won’t allow a forceful takeover like in a military coup. This is affecting the stability of the union and we are saying no more, they should just be patient for us to have our delegate conference,” Sheihk said.

Meanwhile, Izuwa, the acclaimed Acting National President of NUBIFIE and the leader of the opposition group, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.

However, according to the General Secretary, the NLC as an umbrella body for all labour unions and the Federation Ministry of Labour are already working on a reconciliatory meeting for the warring parties in order to bring the situation under control.

He said they had been asked to forward their report to the apex body of the labour union.
