The Ogun State athletes in the just concluded 2018, 4th National Youth Games (NYG) at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State have taken the 3rd position, as they have 11 gold, 7 silver and 16 bronze medals on the final medals table.
Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Solomon Dalung, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sport Development, Mr. Adesola Olusade, who announced the final medals table at the closing ceremony of the 2018, 4th National Youth Games at the main bowl of the University of Ilorin in Kwara State, said Delta State won the first position with 27 gold, 24 silver and 16 bronze and Lagos State came second with 23 gold, 15 silver and 22 bronze medals.
He further said that Ogun and Bayelsa States won the 3rd position with the same numbers of medals, urging all the participating States to see the games as a major unifying factor in the Country as all the States are winners in this years NYG 2018.
Speaking in an interview, the Director, Ogun State Sports Council, Mr. Adesola Faleti said that Ogun State was 7th on the medals table that was released two days before the end of the games, adding that with the effort and resilience of the athletes, the state was able to get more medals which catapulted us to the 3rd position on the final medals table.
Faleti said that, last year, Ogun State came 5th on the medals table with 7 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze medals with lesser States participating, adding that for coming 3rd position in this year NYG it shows that the State athletes are well prepared and determined to making Ogun state proud.
He said the first and second batches of the State athletes departed on the 13th and 15th of September respectively, immediately after their games were concluded and they landed safely in Ogun Sate, saying that the last batch would leave very early on Monday the 17th of September, 2018.
