Alumni of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun, under the aegis of Great Ife Alumni Association Worldwide, are targeting a N500 million endowment fund to aid research and development in the institution.
The association, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, said the fund would be launched at its 21st Biennial Convention billed for May 22 to 25.
The statement signed by Prof. Akinloye Farinde, the Chairman of the convention, said that the fund was one of the initiatives by members to give back to their alma mater.
It stated that the three-day event would also witness the election of new national officers that would pilot the affairs of the body in the next two years.
According to the statement, individuals including members and non-members of the association, corporate organisations and institutions that have contributed to the growth and development of OAU will be honoured at the occasion.
Also on the line up of activities is the 21st Biennial Convention Alumni Lecture titled: “Rule of Law, Governance and Sectorial Development in Nigeria’’, to be delivered by Mr Yusuf Ali (SAN), a legal luminary, an alumnus.
Other activities include dinner and award night, gyration night, Jumat and Church services, courtesy visits to the Vice Chancellor of OAU and the Oni of Ife, among others.
Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, an alumnus business mogul and the Managing Director of Global Fleets Petroleum, Lagos, is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour and one of the awardees.
The statement said that Oba Kiladejo Adesimbo, who is also an alumnus and traditional ruler of Ondo Kingdom, Ondo, would be one of the Royal Fathers of the Day and Special Guests of Honour.
