The legal team of Dr. Ramon Adedoyin has called on the Police authority to invite, question, and possibly file criminal charges against one Oriyomi Hamzat over defamation, character assassination, cyber bullying and misinformation.
According to the legal team, Hamzat was said to have been inciting the public in a manner that may derail police investigations and cause perversion of the course of justice on the death of the MBA student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Mr. Timothy Adegoke.
Head of the legal team, Williams Abiodun, in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo stated that since the beginning of the investigation to unravel the cause of death of the late OAU student, Hamzat has continued to mount social media pressure in order for the Police to be biased in its investigation against their client.
The petition was titled: ‘Complaint of criminal defamation, cyber bullying, inciting public against public authority, misinformation, unlawful interference with police investigations, perversion of the course of justice by one Oriyomi Hamzat on the circumstance surrounding the death of late Mr. Timothy Adegoke, OAU MBA student’.
It said: “We are the counsel to Chief (Dr) Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin of 32, Akindoyin Street to whom we hereinafter referred to as ‘our client’and on whose instruction we write this petition to complain about the act of criminal defamation and cyber-bullying by one Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat, a blogger and a social media influencer.
“You will recall that our client was invited by the Osun State Police Command on the 15th day of November, 2021 and he was subsequently arrested and detained for the purpose of investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Mr. Adegoke Timothy, a MBA Student of Obafemi Awolowo University that lodged in Hilton Hotel (Honours) which is one of our client’s business establishments.
“Since the 15th day of November, 2021 till date, and despite the ongoing investigations, Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat has continued to mount social media pressure on the Police with the sole purpose of pressurizing the Police to be biased in its investigation against our client and coine in unsubstantiated conclusion that will suit the narrow minded narrative of Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat.
“In fact, on the 23rd day of November, 2021, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, during an interview on Rave FM 91.7 confirmed that Police are under pressure as a result of the unsubstantiated information being circulated daily on the social media.
“Our client is particularly concerned that Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat relentlessly continues to harass, embarrass and bully him and spread lies through the unlawfol use of his social media platforms that includes, among others, the following channels: a Facebook page: OriyomiHamzat.com with link https://www.facebook.com/oriyomihamzatpage, Agidigho FM Radio Station; Youtube page, Oriyomi Hamizat Rescue Mission with link: https//youtube.com/c/OriyomiHamzat Rescue Mission.
“Our client has been in the custody of the Police for almost a month without any access to the media or any form of news agency to correct the negative and false information which Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat continues to feed the members of the public about the incidence under investigation.
“He is particularly displeased with the outright criminal defamation against his personality when Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat on the 19th day of November made the public to think him as a murderer.
“On his platform ‘OriyomiHamzat.com’ with link: https://www.facebook.com/oriyomihamzarpage, on Friday, 19h day of November, 2021 at 6:33pm, Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat posted a video titled: ‘Update on Rahman Adegoke Adedoyin; alleged murder of Timothy Adegoke. Pls Share!’
Since the publication of the said video, and as at the time of writing this petition, 296,000 persons had viewed it with 3, 800 comments, 18, 000 shares and 8,500 likes. Any reasonable person can only imagine the level of damage that Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat’s defamatory conducts has done to the reputation of our client and the institutions he established.
“As if the above is not damaging enough, on the 8th day of December, 2021, Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat again posted another video on the same channels captioned: ‘Autopsy Report on Timothy Adegoke is out: You won’t Believe what it says’.
“Specifically, in 6:40-7:41 minutes of the video, Mr. Hamzat claims that the autopsy report contained information that the late Timothy Adegoke was hit on the head with a wood shattering his brain and his two legs were broken and his blood drained for rituals.
“One is left to wonder where Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat is getting his false information which he daily spread on the internet. The conclusive assertion contained in the video in annexure ‘C’ has to do with the post-mortem report of the investigation of the experts into the cause of death of late Mr. Timothy Adegoke which has not been made public as at the time of submitting this petition.
“Our client is then wondering whether he can ever be fairly investigated in the circumstances of this case because the Police has done almost nothing to correct the falsehood which is daily spread on the internet so as not to jeopardy its investigation hence the need to reach out to your good office in through this means to as to call on the Police authority to call Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat to order.
“Again, on the 8th day of December, 2021, Mr Oriyomi Hamzat posted another 17 minutes 30 seconds video where he recklessly alleged that a female student of Oduduwa University from Eruwa town was kidnapped and used for rituals in Oduduwa University owned by our client. This is not only an outrageous falsehood but a very wicked accusation which is defamatory of our client.
“We sadly observed that in the video titled: ‘More Update on Dr. Rahman Adedoyin and Timothy Adegoke Murder Case’, posted on the same channels in November, 2021, Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat placed a call to a person that appears to be one of your officers at the Anti-Kidnapping Squad. Osun State Command, who in turn divulged critical information on the ongoing police investigations to thousands of viewers around the world.
“This is not only highly unprofessional, it is an outright act of gross irresponsibility. We are of the opinion that if Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat’s phone number and call logs are subjected to diligent investigation, the identity or identities of some of your men that are sabotaging your commendable efforts in this case may be revealed.
“Finally, we humbly demand that Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat be invited, questioned and possibly criminal charges filed against him for defamation, character assassination, cyber bullying, misinformation and inciting public against the police authority in a manner that may derail police investigations and cause perversion of the course of justice.
“We thank you for your efforts to resolve the case at hand and we assure you of our best regards.”
