US President Barack Obama on Wednesday commended Nigerian President-elect Muhammadu Buhari and current President Goodluck Jonathan following the African nation’s first democratic transfer of power, and he praised the country’s commitment to democracy.
“I urge President-Elect Buhari and President Jonathan to repeat their calls to their supporters to continue to respect the election outcomes, focus on unifying the country, and together lead Nigeria through a peaceful transition,” Obama said in a statement quoted by Reuters.
Meanwhile, the President-elect will be presented with his Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission Wednesday afternoon.
The Certificate of Return is the evidence that a candidate for any election had been duly certified elected by INEC. The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, will present the certificate to Buhari at the headquarters of the Commission in Abuja.
The ceremony has been fixed for 2pm. It was initially scheduled for 11am.
After receiving the certificate, General Buhari is expected to address Nigerians.
