Obasanjo Tells Parents to Give Children Moral Foundation

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised parents and community leaders to revive the culture of storytelling in order to instil moral values in their children.

He gave the piece of advice on Tuesday at a programme tagged “Story time With Baba”, held in his residence at Ibogun-Olaogun in Coker/Ibogun Local Council Development Area of Ogun State.

The programme involved the former president telling the pupils drawn from his alma mater, Baptist Day School, Ibogun-Olaogun, and other schools within the locality, stories with moral lessons.

The tortoise was the major character in many of the stories.

According to Punch reports, the programme was organised by the Centre for Human Security, an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, as part of the activities marking the former president’s 80th birthday anniversary which comes up on Sunday March 5.

Obasanjo recalled that while growing up in the community, his parents and other community leaders gathered young children, including him, under the moonlight to tell them folktales aimed at shaping their characters.

He said, “They normally require us to solve the riddles so as to make us think deeply and sharpen our wits while they told us stories to inculcate moral values into us.

“Most of the stories revolved round animals, particularly, the tortoise, and would normally end with lessons to build character by pointing us to what to do and what not to do.

“We have grown up with those moral values and they served as foundations upon which we built our lives and conducted ourselves wherever we went.”

Obasanjo was, however, not happy that such a practice had been jettisoned by parents thus denying children the opportunity to build sound moral foundations.

He said he had written 12 books containing many of such stories as part of his efforts to shape children’s characters and prepare them for the future.
