OGSG Moves to Eradicate Teenage Prostitution

By: Kolawole Olayinka, Abeokuta

As part of efforts to curb prostitution especially among teenagers in the State, Ogun State Government has inaugurated an eight-man committee with mandate to eradicate the menace.

The Committee comprised officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Afolabi Afuape and his Women Affairs counterpart, Mrs. Abiola Kufile, while  inaugurating the committee at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, said the  committee was saddled with the responsibilities of sensitizing, arresting and rehabilitating any under-age found in such nefarious activities.

Afuape added that a week-long sensitisation programme to expose members of the public to the danger inherent in prostitution would be carried out in the four stadia across the State before arrest could be made by security personnel.

“The Ministry has always been an advocate against the act of open prostitution across the State especially within the four stadia in the State. Yesterday the committee swung into action by sensitizing shop owners at the MKO Abiola International Stadium. Our plans are that anybody arrested after the sensitization would be enrolled in relevant programmes that will add value to their lives,” Commissioner said.

Calling on the media and other relevant stakeholders to join the crusade against underage prostitution, Afuape said the State government would continue to sensitize the youths against social vices in order for them to discover themselves  through various vocational trainings.

On her part, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Abiola Kufile, described the trend as shameful  to the womenfolk and should  be condemned by all, affirming that government was determined to wage war against teenage prostitution across the State, informing that necessary facilities have been put in place to rehabilitate victims.

Kufile charged parents to be more alive to the responsibility of raising children of morally sound background by instilling in them the fear of God  especially the girl-child as they were more vulnerable to social ills.
