Ogun, CCECC Sign MoU on Light Rail

The Proposed Light Rail Network of the Ogun State Government may soon translate to reality as it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), to construct the Intercity Rail Network that would boost the urban renewal drive of the government. ‪‪

Governor Ibikunle Amosun, while giving insight into the scope of the project when he signed the MoU with Chairmanm of the company, Mr. Cao Bao Gang in his office yesterday, noted that the project, which would commence from Abeokuta-Sagamu-Ilaro-Ota and Idiroko, would be the priority of the state in the next two to three years.

He said the intercity network to Lagos and other neighbouring states, stretching to about eight years, would follow, adding that the step had become imperative so as to reduce the pressure that is presently exerted on the major roads in the state, particularly those leading to the Redemption Camp and the Living Faith Church.

According to him, the gridlock experienced by commuters on the roads, most especially during their church activities, is alarming and needed urgent attention.

‪‪Amosun noted among other things, that the rail network would ease the transportation of commuters from the major industrial hubs and decongest traffic in the state.

‪‪He also informed that his administration is ready to lay the final asphalt of all the roads it had constructed, hinting that the administration was shifting attention to the construction of rural roads while all the uncompleted roads and bridges would be completed.

‪‪”We are starting with the Intra City Rail Network to decongest our major roads across the state and we should be seeing the impact of what we are doing today in the next three years. Thereafter, the intercity network and the entire project will take about eight years. Even by next year, when we would be celebrating the 40 years anniversary of the state, we should be seeing how the project has gone,” he said. ‪‪

Gang said the company is fully ready to work with the government, stating that they are more motivated to do the job because the governor is focused and determined to make life better for the people. ‪‪

He stated that the rail network is achievable within three years, adding that the company would also help the state to raise fund for the project.
