Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State on Monday destroyed 11 trucks and products worth millions of naira belonging to the factory alleged to have owned the vehicle that crushed 12 of their colleagues to death last Friday.
The students during a peaceful rally-turned-violent at the site of the accident had earlier prayed for the repose of souls of the victims at the scene of the accident along Sagamu-Ilisan road where they called for investigation into the incessant crashes along that road.
The students all dressed in black attire were conveyed to the scene of the accident in five buses with OOU officials directing the students.
Security men and road traffic officials were positioned along the junctions in the area directing the traffic. Some of the students were wailing, while some were singing sad melodies.
They also prayed and observed a minute silence in honour of their departed colleague.
Speaking after the prayer, the President of the Students Union Government of OOU, Comrade Ademola Adegbesan, called on the government to investigate the incessant crashes along the road caused by the recklessness of drivers and negligence of securitymen.
Other students also decried the negligence and complicity of some security agents in the frequent accidents along Sagamu/Lagos Expressway.
The Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Sagamu, Mr. Adetunji Adegoke, while reacting to the allegation of negligence on the part of their men noted that drivers sometime obey the rules when they see traffic officials and turn blind eye when traffic officials are not in sight.
He also blamed the death on the usually long distance of the hospital where victims of the accidents on the express road were taken to and the constant rejection of road accident victims by the OOU Teaching Hospital at Sagamu.
The students’ protest later degenerated into violence when some of the students on sighting samples of the content of the container that killed their colleagues within the factory close to the accident scene, descended on them and burnt them.
