The Ogun State Government has begun plans to generate electricity through sawdust, as part of its contribution towards increasing electricity generation in the country.
The Commissioner for Forestry, Chief Kolawole Lawal, revealed this during an inspection visit to saw-mills in Ijebu-Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the State.
Chief Lawal said the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Energy Commission of Nigeria in collaboration with the State Government were putting efforts together to devise a technology that would generate electricity from sawdust.
“The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Electricity Commission of Nigeria (ECN), and the State Government are on a project now that will convert sawdust to energy”.
He stated further that the State Government is currently carrying out a feasibility study of the project which in due course would materialise.
Lawal therefore implored the saw-millers not to waste the sawdust, saying though it is seen as a waste product but would soon become raw materials for energy.
