The men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three members of a kidnap syndicate said to be operating on the Lagos -Ibadan Expressway.
The suspects were arrested at the Fidiwo area on the expressway according to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi in Abeokuta on Monday.
Those arrested are Nathaniel Jacob (24), Isah Danladi (22) and Abubakar Rabiu (23), all from the Northern part of the country.
According to the statement, they were arrested following a tip-off from local hunters who heard them discussing on how they intend to carry out an operation on the highway, while inside a bush.
Oyeyemi said the Police acted promptly on the information provided by the hunters and mobilised other security agencies in arresting the hoodlums.
The statement said: “The hunters quickly alerted the police, who rallied other stakeholders such as So Safe Corps, hunters group and stormed the Fidiwo Alapako bush.
“On sighting the police, the suspects took to their heels, but luck ran out on the three and they were subsequently apprehended, while three others escaped with their arms.
“On interrogation, the suspects confessed to have been in the bush for about ten days, waiting for a convenient opportunity to strike. They said it took them so long to strike because of heavy presence of policemen on the strech of the expressway.
“They confessed that they are six in number which makes up the gang and that the escaped three are in possession of their arms.”
The PPRO stated further that preliminary investigation revealed that the gang had been responsible for the series of kidnapping along the expressway.
Items recovered from them are cutlasses which they claimed were seized from farmers they saw on their farms.
He added that the commissioner of police CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to an anti-kidnapping unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.
