The Ondo State House of Assembly has elected and sworn in its first female speaker. She is Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, who represents Okitipupa Constituency 2 in the Southern senatorial district of the state.

She scored 13 votes to defeat Hon. Oyebo Aladetan, who scored eight votes, and Hon. Soji Akinkurolere, who had no vote in the election conducted on the floor of the House Tuesday.

Her election brings to two the number of female speakers in the South-west geopolitical zone, the first being the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Monsurat Summonu.

In her acceptance speech, Hon. Akindele called for unity among the House members.

She also immediately dissolved all standing committees in the House and instructed that all properties of the House unlawfully possessed by any member be retrieved with immediate effect by the Clerk of the House.
