An All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Group in Ondo State hit the streets of Akure, Ondo State capital in a procession to protest against Senator Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West in the Senate, who reportedly threatened to attack Senator Oluremi Tinubu last week during an executive session of the Senate.
The Ondo State Coordinator of the group and former member of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Fola Olasehinde Vincente, described the attack on Senator Tinubu as one too many on Nigerian Women by Senator Dino Melaye, who she claimed had records of assault and physical attack on women as seen in the alleged reports of his first wife, Tokunbo Melaye.
She noted that the action of Dino Melaye was inhuman, unjust, indecent and a shameful behaviour from a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
She said: “Melaye could flex his muscles if he so will but not by being a bully in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as evident in the way he sprang up from his seat and charged towards Senator Tinubu and threatened to physically assault her,”
Hon. Olasehinde Vicente added that “this is the height of legislative rascality ever perpetrated by any lawmaker in this country and Mr. Melaye has misrepresented the good people of Kogi West Senatorial District who elected him to office by his barbaric show of shame that has become a national embarrassment”.
Being a former parliamentarian herself, she added: ” It is un-parliamentary for anyone in the Legislative Assembly to exhibit aggression-verbal or physical assault- not to talk of expressing derogatory sexual harassment against a fellow female member.”
During the procession, the group called for appropriate sanctions to be meted out to Dino Melaye by the leadership of the Senate so as to serve as deterrent to all men who assault women in the country and for Nigerian Women to take National Assembly seriously as people capable and responsible enough to make laws for the safety of women in this country henceforth.
The women therefore called on every woman of the world to rise against any assault on fellow women because an attack on one woman is an attack on all women.
