Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have attacked an old generation bank in Iju-Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Council Area of Ondo state, killing a female police officer who was not in uniform and injuring many staff and customers who were transacting businesses.
WESTERN POST gathered that the incident happened around 3:40 in the evening on Tuesday.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident.
According to him, “The robbery was a sad occurrence today at Iju, where heavily-armed robbers invaded a bank using all sorts of sophisticated weapons and eventually killed a female police officer.”
He noted that several staff and customers of the bank were attacked and injured by the robbers.
A source, who confirmed the news to our correspondent, said the robbers forced their way into the bank and made away with huge amount of money.
The source disclosed that security men, which included men from the 32 Artillery Brigade engaged the robbers in a gun duel.
“They have just attacked the bank in Iju-Itaogbolu and everybody is scampering for safety.
“I saw many people injured and I am also aware that they (robbers) killed some people whose identities I cannot ascertain at the moment,” the source said.
However, the robbers was said to have arrived the town in two buses numbering about 10 with dangerous weapons ranging from AK 47 riffles, dynamites and many locally made guns.
On their arrival, they started shooting sporadically to the air to scare the passersby.
The police image maker said the police would definitely unravel them in due course as we are already on their trail.
