Gunmen on Saturday killed a suspected cultist at Odogbo Ward 6 of Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun State during the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in the state.
It was gathered that the incident which happened in the morning, threw people who had queued for the accreditation into confusion as they scamper for safety.
The development, it was further learnt brought the election in the ward to an end because voters ran away from the polling centre.
The deceased was said to be a cultist and had offended members of rival cult who had been looking for an avenue to get rid of him in the past few weeks.
Eyewitness account who preferred not to be named, revealed that the killers stormed the polling centre knowing fully well that he would participate in the exercise and shot him dead.
It was learnt that when the deceased wes sighted on the queue, he was immediately shot dead and the killers left the scene, entered an already waiting vehicle that brought them for the operation.
Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident said investigation was ongoing.
Opalola said: “Witnesses at the scene and some residents claimed that the victim was also a known cultist in the community.
“When the police were informed of the incident, they chased the suspects and accosted them at Iwara-Ijesa.
“The suspects then opened gunfire at the police team, which led to exchange of gunshots that eventually forced the suspects to flee into the bush, after they were overpowered, thereby leaving their vehicle and motorcycle behind.”
The police spokesperson said that they abandoned the Hilux truck and motorcycle they brought and that it had been taken to Ilesa Police Area Command, while the police was on the trail of the suspects.
She added that the deceased’s body had been deposited at the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
