Former African queen of the track, Mary Onyali Omagbemi, has called on Nigerians to give full support to the programmes of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
She made the call while speaking with sportswriters at Akure Township Stadium, Akure, Ondo State capital, where NSC Director-General Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye was recently honoured.
Onyali, an ex-captain of Team Nigeria and at present Special Assistant on Technical Matters to NSC DG, said the commission was pre-occupied with efforts aimed at ensuring that stars in the mould of herself (Onyali) were discovered and nurtured to world beaters.
’I want to use this medium to call on all Nigerians to support the Minister/Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, the Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, as well as all the staff of the commission in our bid to put Nigerian sport in the right direction.
‘’You can see that lately, we have been getting it right in most of the sporting events and this is possible because of the commitment and the doggedness of every staff of the commission, particularly the minister and the DG’’.
Onyali said the commission had lots of developmental programmes underway but stated that only the total support of every Nigerian could make it to be successful.
On her new assignment, the ex-Olympian described it as another opportunity to give back what she had gained while representing the country.
She described her new work as more tasking than when she was Team Nigeria’s captain, considering the fact that she now focuses on every other sports apart from athletics.
Speaking on Elegbeleye, the former Olympian described him as a man who has what it takes to occupy his present position.
“Since I have been working with him, I have discovered that this is a hardworking man who is ready to go the extra mile to move sports forward in Nigeria,” she said.
