Bukayo Fajana, the husband of 25-years-old Damilola killed by a stray bullet in Arepo Community, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, during a clash between members of Oodua People’s Congress and some pipeline vandals is still grieving over the loss of his wife of barely one year. He said he should have died instead of his wife.
Just like Bukayo, the agony of Damilola’s parents knows no bound. The late Damilola’s parents were un-consolable when WESTERN POST encountered them on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo State. A stray bullet had hit pregnant Damilola on the neck as she was driving back home on Wednesday, April 29 after a visit to her ailing husband who was on admission at a private hospital in Ikeja, Lagos. Damilola was one of the three persons reportedly killed during the gun battle between the OPC members and the pipeline vandals. Arepo had been turned into a battleground of sort between the suspected pipeline vandals who are mostly Ijaws and OPC members hired by the Federal Government to protect the pipelines around Lagos. Meanwhile, the remains of the late Damilola were buried at the weekend in Lagos.
She Was My Confidant, Says Deceased’s Father Ojo
WESTERN POST had gone in search of late Damilola’s parents at their residence along Abiodun Street, Oke-Aro, Akure. The deceased’s father, Mr. Andrew Babafemi Ojo, described Damilola as his confidant. He also said she was a brilliant, caring and loving daughter.
“She was my daughter, sister and my dearest one. She consoled me most times on phone whenever I’m down emotionally. My first fruit in life has been killed. In fact, I will miss everything about her including her words of encouragement to me. I have submitted everything to God who created Heaven and the Earth,” he said.
Damilola’s friends and class mates from primary and secondary schools have been coming to console the family.
Damilola’s Mum: Her Blood Should Be Used to Halt Killing of Innocent Souls
Late Damilola’s mum, Mrs. Yemisi Ojo, told WP: “Damilola is gone now, but my word of advice to the government is to use the blood of my daughter to stop the killing of innocent souls in the land. If not for her profession as a lawyer, many might not have heard of her killing, the issue would have been swept under the carpet. Imagine President Goodluck Jonathan giving pipeline contracts to OPC, where our graduates are roaming the streets without jobs. This is highly unfair”.
