OPINION: Asiwaju Tinubu Presidency Bid Much More Than Yoruba Project, By Kola Amzat

Eventually, orderliness seems to be prevailing within the political class in the South-West. They appear to be listening to the voice of reason about unity and togetherness’ coming directly from the graveside of Oduduwa, their ancestral father. The needless and mindless storms gathering around Tinubu presidency within the zone seem to be fast disappearing.

This fact is eloquently demonstrated with the springing up of many groups in support of the project, with particular reference to the major one comprising distinguished Senators, House of Representative members, as well as politicians of high repute in the zone. They are already conferring with the zone’s royal fathers, notably Alaafin of Oyo, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, with the main objective of seeking the traditional rulers’ blessings for the project.

Of course, in the weeks ahead, it’s expected that the itinerary of the group would include visiting and interacting with other Obas in the zone; Ooni of Ife, Awujale of Ijebuland, Alake of Egbaland, Oba of Lagos, Osemawe of Ondo, Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Akarigbo of Remoland, for the same purpose.  We equally expect that the political entourage’s plan will include reaching out to prominent and accomplished Yoruba like Chiefs Olusegun Obasanjo, Afe Babalola, Ayo Opadokun, Ayo Adebanjo, Prof Banji Akintoye and even, Senator Femi Okurounmu, as well as members of Afenifere group to canvass their support for the presidency project.

The centerpiece of their discourse & interaction with the royal fathers is expected to revolve around the fact that, as far as 2023 presidential race is concerned, Asiwaju Tinubu remains the best & the brightest hope for the Yoruba and that, it’s a fact that can’t be controverted. We expect them to state in glowing terms, his loads of achievements, as well as impressive antecedents in various strata; governance, business, international and domestic politics, etc. We also expect them to draw the attention of royal fathers to his exploits in infrastructural, educational, economic, socio-cultural, and political sectors in Lagos State, while he was in charge of the state as executive governor, and also affirm to them that, it’s the aggregate of those commanding achievements & series of developmental initiatives, that have culminated into what has become modern Lagos today.

His legacy of blueprint bequeathed onto the state’s successive administrations, meant to endure for the next 20 years is expected to form the fulcrum of their discourse. The royal fathers are expected to be intimated of how Tinubu strategically deployed resources within his disposal to reclaim the entire Southwest zone from the captivity of the reactionary forces between 2007 and 2014, and even up to the present time.

The briefing of the royal fathers is also expected to include Tinubu’s dominant role in the formation of APC in 2014, as well as his heroic outing in ensuring the victory of President Buhari both in 2015 and 2019 general elections, as well as his strategic initiatives in ensuring victories for most APC governors, senators, House of Representative members and the party flagbearers in various states across the federation. On the part of the royal fathers, the aforementioned harvest of Tinubu’s achievements are expected to be dominant in their interaction and briefing among their colleagues, in other five (5) geo-political zones, when they are making case for Tinubu candidacy.

In the same vein, it’s expected that prominent Yoruba chieftains, who would have been sufficiently armed with Tinubu’s impressive record of achievements and past stewardship consequent upon their briefing by the political entourage, would reach out to other socio-cultural groups, as well leaders of thoughts in other zones, with the sole objective of seeking their understanding and support for the project.

Let me at this juncture submit that, it’s most pleasing and heartwarming that Yoruba have once again found common ground to unite, with the coming together of the political forces within the zone to spearhead the titanic battle for the actualization of Tinubu presidency. The world has always reckoned with the fact that, when the chips are down, the Yoruba always have the unusual capacity to regroup against all odds. And they have never disappointed! That’s the hallmark of the great race that we are. That’s what makes the race towers above others. That’s what attracts dignity and respect to the race and that’s why the Yoruba have become the brides and most sought after by the others. Spirit of togetherness and oneness of purpose when it matters most!

The presidency of Nigeria is indeed a big deal. It’s therefore incumbent on all stakeholders in Yorubaland to come together once again and ensure that, we achieve it. We would profit absolutely nothing if we allow the opportunity to slip away. It’s common knowledge that the job is not for a feeble mind. The office is meant for a great, strategic, broadminded, strong-willed, decisive, and very resourceful mind that has seen it all. The assignment is for the one, who would not compromise the unity, oneness, and togetherness of Nigeria, as well as continually protecting her territorial integrity.

The onerous job is meant for the distinguished Nigerian, with the capacity to re-ignite & re-invent the lost excitement & enthusiasm of Nigerians and make them, once again find justifiable reasons, why they must be proud of the country they once cherish so much and hold dearly. More importantly, the assignment is for that man who is already a bridge builder and would continue to sustain and maintain the bridge-building project, amongst the diverse ethnic groups, political divides, age, sex, cultural differences, as well as sustain the indivisible state of the nation. That’s the main reason why the Yoruba must present their best & brightest for other zones to support.

Without any iota of doubt, Tinubu embodies all aforementioned qualities and attributes and we’re enormously proud of this. Kayode Fayemi, a two-time governor of Ekiti State and immediate past Minister of Solid Minerals, reserves the rights to aspire like any other Nigerian, but he doesn’t possess the political sagacity to be the torchbearer of Yoruba. This is also true of the case of the very resourceful Babatunde Raji Fashola, whose direction the Yoruba should start focusing at for future leadership of the race after Asiwaju Tinubu must have vacated the stage. Obviously, Fashola time to lead the country is in the future. The future is ahead of him.

In fact, the Yoruba and their well-wishers expect the duo to spearhead and stand like warring and resolute soldiers, in the forefront of the battle for the actualization of Tinubu presidency, having been major beneficiaries of Tinubu’s large-heartedness and political benevolence over the years.

Nigeria is one of the few countries on the earth’s surface prodigiously endowed with incredible resources, but obviously lacking in focus, resourceful and visionary leaders to galvanize the resources for the fulfillment of the country’s full potentials. There is no great nation without great & resourceful minds. The people of the great and prosperous nations that Nigerians madly crave for, collectively and collaboratively make it a point of duty to deliberately and strategically chose their very best in the pool, to lead them anytime opportunity comes.

That’s why those nations would not stop prospering, even in leaps and bounds. Interestingly, the black race has never fallen short of this crop and rare breed, the major stumbling block has always been that, when the time comes to make a purposeful choice, we tend to allow political and partisan interests, envy, strife, and petty jealousy to becloud our collective sense of reasoning.

Let’s at this juncture reflect on the amazing exploits of Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry Rawlings, Jomo Kenyatta, Nelson Mandela, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, etc. They were all black men with great and developmental minds. Happily enough, 2023 presents another golden opportunity to redress the anomaly of the past. It’s incumbent on all of us, to get it right this time around. There is no doubt that Bola Tinubu is endowed with the innate capacity to cause an unfathomable turn-around in the nation’s persistent economic woes, infrastructural decay, educational rot, confusion in the socio-cultural sphere, as well as ensuring once more, the relevance of Nigeria in the international market and diplomacy.

Before rounding up on this piece, let me strongly advise the duo of Senators Danjuma Goje and Yerima Abdulahi that, it’s more dignifying and honorable to abide by the Gentleman Agreement’ reached by the founding fathers of APC in 2014 that, power must shift to the South after the North would have exhausted their reign of eight years comes 2023.

The duo’s resolve to continue to cause confusion in the political sphere by their recalcitrance and insistence to pursue their presidential ambitions, would further do irreparable damage to their political careers, as well as further consign them to political oblivion, reminiscent of what they experienced in the recent past, consequent upon their similar flagrant disobedience of the party directives, as well as working against the interests of the party.
