OPINION: Halting Sanwo-Olu Impressive Movement Half-Way May Be Counterproductive, By Kola Amzat

Behind every rumor, there is an iota of truth. In the past few months, the news was dominant in the public domain that Mr. BabajideSanwo-Olu may not be offered the opportunity of second term in office by the APC leadership in Lagos state for the reasons best known to them.

The rumor mill was agog with the fact that, the party hierarchy were opting for the incumbent Head of Service in the state to replace the governor in order to satisfy a well laid out political balancing arrangement.

Of course, the development was destructive and counterproductive to governance in the state particularly coming at a very sensitive time when the incumbent governor still have about 15 months to round upon his first tenure.

But, we must commend the most potent and reliable political organ in the state-GAC for their swift response to the ugly development capable of bringing governance & political activities in the state to ground zero.

They stoutly came out to deny that, there has never been any move in that respect and more importantly, there wouldn’t be any move in that direction.

They also affirmed that, there wasn’t any reason whatsoever to halt Sanwo-Olu developmental forays. Remarkably, the dramatis personae in the rumor, Hakeem Muri Okunola came out very assuredly to deny the rumor, as well as went further to affirmed his loyalty and maximum support for the second term in office of the governor.

That’s the present development & update and we expect that the leadership hierarchy of the party would uphold and honor their promises at the fullest of time.

Across the world including Nigeria, the essence of governance is to make life more meaningful and worthwhile for the citizenry.

Even though Sanwo-Olu hasn’t touched all the areas expected of him, however, he has displayed strong will in governance. He has connected and still connecting with people of Lagos.

Till date, he’s remained loyal to the good people of Lagos who saddled him with the sacred mandate of leading perhaps the most prosperous state in the whole of Nigeria. The governor has been remarkably prompt, responsive and responsible.

More importantly, the governor seems to have stabilized the party in the state, a marked departure from Ambode era when the party was always singing a discordant tune contrary to the people in government. On the same note is the wonderful relationship that is presently existing between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the state. It takes a lot of maturity and a governor imbued with large quantum of diplomacy to handle Nigerian legislators, more-so that of Lagos state. He’s also appreciably been loyal to the cause of the party.

For emphasis, this governor’s bold footprints have been noticed in the roads infrastructures, security, health, educations, environment, state economy, even entertainment & sports, as well as technological developments.

Through the excellent management of Covid-19 & Omicron variant pandemic by the state, Nigeria was recently ranked 4th in the entire world by WHO in terms of her efforts at curtailing the dreaded scourge. This is no mean feat by global standard. In the years ahead, Nigeria would surely reap the rewards.

The state has also significantly over-hauled the health facilities across the state in an attempt to prepare even for the worst of pandemic with respect to technical know-how, as well as building medical infrastructures of global standard, if they ever surface again. In Yaba, Ebute-Metta, Apapa, Isolo, Ifako and Odan, general hospitals have either been completely renovated or new one built in order to make health care services available and affordable for the citizenry.

In the same vein, the state government has built and comprehensively equipped maternal and childcare centers both in EtiOsa, Epe and Badagry. Sanwo-olu government in collaboration with the private sector, built and handed over oxygen plant at Gbagada and Mainland General Hospitals. Also, oxygen centres and Triage in 10 locations across the state have been completed and delivered.

This governor has completed and delivered gigantic Pen Cinema Fly over Projects, thus completely transforming hitherto filthy Agege sprawling community and its environs into a modern environment, resulting in up scaling of commercial activities there.

Within two years, Lagos/Ogun boundary roads have been completed, thus bringing decency and orderliness to that corridor.

In the same vein, networks of roads in Ojokoro, Somolu, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, as well as Allen Avenue have been completed &delivered to ease vehicular movement and make life more meaningful for residents.

Of course, Oshodi-AbuleEgba BRT lanes, as well as 301 inner roads networks in the 20 LGCs and LCDAs have been successfully delivered.  Sanwo-Olu government has taken a giant step in agricultural development of the state. Agriculture Value Chains Fund targeted at businesses geared at providing funding for Agriculture Entrepreneurs has been instituted.

On a related note, Eko Farmers’ Market to deliberately provide off-takers for farmers across the state to dispose of farm produce on regular basis has been established.A Rice Mill established at Imota has created employment for 250,000 citizens of the state. The same goes for Lagos Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support project that has provided funding for the numerous Small &Medium Scale Entrepreneurs.

In the educational sector, within two years of Sanwoolu administration, the state has added an additional two (2) Universities to the already existing Lagos state University. This is a bold move and a wonderful opportunity for the teeming youths of the state to continually equip themselves with qualitative university education and cement a prosperous and fulfilled future life for themselves. On a related note, the governor has equipped several secondary schools with laboratory equipment and IT Infrastructures essentially geared at providing contemporary education for the students.

The Entertainment and Sports sector are not lacking behind. Indeed, this governor has committed huge funds on sponsorship of marathons of international standard designed to Lagos and Nigeria onto the world map of sports. On a related note, fortunes have been deployed for the upgrade and infrastructures renewal of Agege, Onikan, TeslimBalogun stadia within the last two years. Rowe Parks sporting complex, Yaba has also attracted the attention of the governor.

Even though, GAC in the state categorically affirmed that, they and the citizenry of the state are quite comfortable with Sanwo-Olu returns to office for second term, however, political sphere is dynamics, as it’s largely unpredictable. Decisions change in a twinkle of an eye and political leaders would always justify reasons why they embark on a particular course of action. This is therefore a passionate appeal to eminent, highly revered and very patriotic political stalwarts in Lagos state who constitute GAC that they should let Sanwo-Olu be in the interest of his incredible forays into all areas of development within the last 2 years and more especially, in the overall interest of stabilizing the party.

A key benefit that would accrue to APC in Lagos and the entire South West with Sanwo-Olu second term in office is that, he would sustain the already impregnable political fortress of APC in Lagos, while AsiwajuTinubu battles it out at the centre, the project that In ShaAllau would manifest. The governor has proved that he’s reliable, trustworthy, dependable and credible.
