In line with the threat and promise made by one of the campaign managers of Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, Mr Isaac Kekemeke to unleash violence and mayhem on all categories of perceived opposition to Akeredolu’s reelection bid, members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) backed by the governor have commenced series of coordinated attacks on members of our party, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) across the state.
The attacks which started last weekend at Supare-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area, continued unabated on 30th August, 2020, at Akungba Akoko, where a planned ZLP ward meeting to receive new members was disrupted and members in attendance injured by thugs loyal to the APC and Mr. Governor.
The two onslaughts were sponsored and supervised by members of the cabinet of Mr. Governor with the active connivance of security agents in the state.
It is disheartening, reprehensible and worrisome that a state being governed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria cannot guarantee the basic fundamental human right of freedom of association as eshrined in section 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). Even most shameful and clearly unacceptable is the reality that the government, political party and agents of Akeredolu, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria have resorted to violence and crude intimidation in a political contest.
It is understandable that these violent onslaughts on innocent and defenceless people of the state are the last kicks of a dying horse as Mr Governor is now aware of the outright rejection of his re-election bid by the people of Ondo State.
It is therefore pertinent for us to formally draw the attention of all security agencies in Nigeria and particularly the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu and Director General of the State Security Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi to the urgent need to take the bull by the horns and act decisively to nip in the bud this orgy of violence ochestrated by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as evidently confessed by one of its chieftains.
Democracy survives on the freewill of the people. No amount of intimidation and harassment can stop the collective decision of the people committed to break free from the rule of one man, his family, clan and clique.
