Pandemonium broke out in Idi-Iroko, in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Saturday, when Oro worshippers stormed a mosque and pelted Muslim faithful with stones during their festival.
The Wakeelul Muslimeen of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal on Monday narrated the incident to our correspondent that the incident happened when the Muslims were praying the afternoon (Suhr) prayer in the mosque.
He said the Oro worshippers were provoked over the action of the Muslims who went out contrary to their warning to observe their prayers.
Lawal said, “The incident occurred at 1:18 pm on Saturday when our Muslim brothers were obeserving Suhr prayer in Umar bin Khatab mosque at Odan-Aje behind the General hospital, Idi-Iroko.
“They (Oro worshippers) invaded the mosque and pelted the Imam and the congregation with stones, and sent them away from the mosque. They later destroyed the property in the mosque.
“We condemn the action of the Oro worshippers and urge the government to intervene in this issue before it escalates.
“It is not in the Nigerian 1999 constitution that, no one, whether he is a Muslim or not, must not go out at a particular day or time because of Oro festival.
“Everybody is free to practise what he wants, no one should impose his ideology on another person. Government must intervene before it becomes too late”.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident.
He said the command had made arrested some of the suspected perpetrators.
