Few hours to the Osun State House of Assembly election, the major parties in the state, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trade blames over attack on members on Thursday night.
The parties in Ibokun, Obokun Local Government Area of the State had on Thursday night launched attack on each other leaving several injured and cars damaged.
Explaining his own side of the incident to journalists in Osogbo on Friday, the APC candidate for Obokun State Constituency, Hon. Olatubosun Oyintiloye claimed that members of PDP ignited the fracas by attacking his office located in Ibokun.
Oyintiloye, who is the Chairman House committee on information and strategy, alleged that the PDP candidate, Arch. Adewumi Adeyemi with his personal car, led hoodlums to his office in Ibokun and attempted to kill him with gun so as to intimidate his supporters against tomorrow’s (Saturday) election.
The legislator, who is seeking a return under the platform APC, stated that some of the hoodlums were identified with the help of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) and have been arrested by the police.
He explained that he managed to escape bullet shot by the hoodlums while many of his supporters were injured.
According to him, “We were at my campaign office on Thursday 7th March, after series of meetings were held and we saw armed PDP hoodlums, led by Arch. Adeyemi came in different directions and started shooting sporadically.
“These thugs were practically shooting in my direction with the aim to assassinate me, while many of my supporters were seriously injured.
“We reported this case at the police station and the police swung into action by arresting some of these people as other were presently at large,” Oyintiloye said.
Oyintiloye who boasted that he is the popular among the electorates expressed confidence that he would win the election come Saturday.
Narrating her own ordeal, the spokesperson for the PDP, Mrs Grace Olojede Omotosho accused members of APC of descending on her members, in connivance with security operatives, including military personnel.
Omotosho, claimed that she begged Oyintiloye and his supporters to stop the assault but was discarded, adding that the atmosphere later became charged when some of PDP members were whisked away by the police.
She further alleged that there was a covert move by the ruling APC to intimidate electorate in the constituency, having realised its waned popularity and acceptance.
“We were accosted at Hon. Oyintiloye’s office while returning from campaign ground at Ikinyinwa, as many of our members were seriously brutalised.
“Some of my members later mobilised and returned to the scene of the violence, but I personally appealed to them to be peaceful and not unnecessarily heat up the polity; I specifically begged Oyintiloye to caution his followers and maintain peace all to no avail.
“I was later attacked at my sister’s office in which my car was damaged in the process, while some of our members were arrested and presently detained, including our candidate for tomorrow’s election, arch. Adewunmi Adeyemi”, Omotosho lamented.
She therefore called for quick intervention from appropriate quarters to douse tension in the area, as she clamoured for justice for her members.
