Speaker, Osun State of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, on Tuesday directed the Assembly’s Director of Legal to commence with the review of the state 2002 anti-rape laws for amendments that would stipulate special punishment for people who committed rape for ritual purposes.
Speaking during the Assembly plenary session, Owoeye noted that there are some people using rape for rituals and the law need to capture such people.
He said, “Anybody that rapes for ritual purposes and anybody that send people to rape for ritual purposes should be punished by the law.
“The House Director of Legal should come up with how such individuals involved in ritual rape should be punished.
“I have spoken with some top legal luminaries in the state and they have advise that we should have special courts that would handle rape cases in the state.
“Times are changing and it is very important that we review the existing anti-rape laws and make changes to capture and deal with recent happenings.
“We need to review our anti-rape laws, not only from the woman angle but also from the men angle too because men too do get rape.”
Meanwhile, the speaker has also directed the House Committee on Environment to write a letter to the state Ministry of Environment, on how the State Government can stop illegal mining in the Ijesa axis of the state, which has been affecting farming and farmlands.
He said illegal miners were encroaching and taking over the farm lands in the Ijesa Gold deposit axis and that if drastic action is not taken, the future of the farmers in the region would be jeopardised.
