Seven people were shot dead on Wednesday during an attempted bank robbery in Apomu and Ikire in Isokan and Irewole local government areas of Osun State.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yemisi Opalola disclosed in a statement on Thursday that an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Osho Oluranti, an Inspector, Lekan Olalere; two Special Constabularies, Oladeni Olalekan, and Oyedeji Muyideen were killed by the armed robbers.
She also disclosed that three civilians namely; Toheeb Oyebola, Temilorun Adebiyi and one other, (whose identity is not yet known), all-male were killed in the process.
Opalola stated that the armed robbers, numbering about 35 came in five vehicles, around 6:10pm and simultaneously attacked Ikire Divisional Police HQ and the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) pinned down at Ikoyi-Osun with several explosive devices and fired several guns in a bid to subdue the capacity of the Police while attempting to rob First Bank, Ikire and Access Bank, Apomu respectively.
The PPRO, however, noted that the robbery attempt on the banks was foiled as the assailants fled in the bush with gunshot wounds, abandoning two vehicles they used for the operation.
She said: “The armed robbers on sighting the overwhelming Policemen comprising Prompt Response Unit (PRU), CP’s Surveillance team, IRT Operatives, STS, 39 PMF, JTF, along with the local security outfits, who swiftly engaged them in a fierce gun duel, began to flee.
“They did not succeed robbing any of the banks. The assailants fled to the bush with gunshot wounds, abandoning two of the operational vehicles they came with.
“All the corpses have been deposited at Oluyoro Catholic Hospital morgue, Apomu.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing Suspects.”
