Osun 2018 Governorship: Akande Backs Osun West to Succeed Aregbesola

By Tunde Oyekola, Osogbo

The pioneer National Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande, has thrown his weight behind Osun West Senatorial District to produce the next governor after the incumbent Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola in 2018.

Akande gave the indication while playing host to the leadership of a socio-political group, Osun New Era Group (ONE-G), who paid him a courtesy visit in his country home,  Ila Orangun, Osun State.

Akande admonished the people of the area to be united and fight a common struggle to produce a credible candidate for the governorship seat that will become vacant in November 2018.

The governorship seat of the state will become vacant next year at the expiration of the second term tenure of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

The Osun West Senatorial District is being favoured by virtually all political parties to take over from Aregbesola because the zone has only ruled the state for 22 months since the creation of the state. And that was under the late Isiaka Adeleke aka Serubawon who died last year on the cusp of another gubernatorial challenge.

Chief Bisi Akande and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, both from Osun Central, held sway in the state for twelve years while the incumbent, Ogbeni Aregbesola from Osun East Senatorial District, would have spent eight years at the expiration of his tenure in 2018.

According to Chief Akande, any attempt by anyone or political party to deny the senatorial district the benefit of producing the next governor would amount to sheer injustice and against the spirit of fairplay.

Akande who is also former governor of the state said the two remaining senatorial districts (Osun Central and Osun East) have had their fair share of presiding over the affairs of state at one time or the other.

“Of the three senatorial districts in the state, it’s only the west that has never had the opportunity of exercising a minimum of one full tenure since the state was created in 1991.

“Save for the truncated administration of the late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the district has never had another shot at the governorship but rather supported others to ensure success for their candidates,” Chief Akande emphasised.

In his response, the Coordinator of the group, Comrade Rasak Alarape, lauded the prominent politician for his support to the government at the centre at rescuing the country from mirage of challenges facing the nation.

Alarape expressed appreciation to the elder statesman for his forthrightness in speaking the minds of the group by throwing his weight behind the need to ensure that the Osun West Senatorial District produces the next governor of the state.

The group leader and other members expressed their appreciation to Chief Akande for the warm reception accorded the group and pray the Almighty God to spare his life to see the emergence of the Osun of his dream.
