A fourteen member Council of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in South-West, last Tuesday rose from its emergency meeting with a four point ultimatum in which the party threatens not to recognise the result of osun state governorship election should the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fail to include the name and symbol of NRM on the ballot papers for the exercise holding on Saturday (tomorrow).
The Deputy National Chairman of the NRM, Otunba Niyi Dada who presided over the meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State stated that the forum deliberated on the unwarranted exclusion of the name of its Osun governorship candidate from INEC’s list and described the anomaly as the beginning of the commission’s grand design to rig the election.
The council had also expressed displeasure over the negligent exclusion of Jumoke Lawoyin(its female candidate) from the approved list displayed by INEC and vowed to pursue to logical end a court action it has instituted over the matter.
In the resolution in which the council described her exclusion as illegal, even after the commission had supervised the primaries that produced Lawoyin’s emergence, it argued that disenfranchising its candidate is capable of causing the breach of peace in the state.
The resolution released to the press by the Secretary General of the council, Olatubosun Bambo stated that the National Rescue Movement has lost confidence in the electoral commission’s ability to ensure credible election in osun state in view of the failure of INEC to rectify the anomaly, even in spite of repeated demand to include Jumoke Lawoyin’s name among forty eight other candidates for the election.
The Deputy National Chairman of NRM recalled that the party at INEC’s meeting with all its state Resident Commissioners in Abuja had drawn the attention of the commission to the negligent exclusion of Jumoke Lawoyin from the list and expressed disappointment that up till now (a day to the election) INEC is yet to rectify the anomaly.
