Ahead of the September 22 governorship election in Osun State, the fortune of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) got a boost as prominent politicians decamped from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the new party which is gaining ground in the state.
A senatorial aspirant on the platform of the party, Prince Dotun Babayemi on Saturday led thousands of his supporters across all the council areas of the senatorial district to the opposition Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Gbongan, headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Council Area of the State.
Two Commissioners, Mr Wale Bolorunduro and Oluomo Sunday Akere who served in the Ministry of Finance and Information respectively during the first tenure of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Bayo Salami had earlier joined ADP from the ruling party.
Addressing the mammoth crowd of ADP members on the occasion, Prince Babayemi cited the current neglect of the senatorial district by the incumbent administration in the state as one of the major reasons for his defection into the ADP.
According to the Gbongan Prince, Osun West Senatorial District has suffered much neglect by successive administrations while electorate in the area patiently awaited their turn at the governorship seat, only to have their hope dashed by the APC leadership in the state.
“In view of the Osun West Senatorial District’s open denial of the governorship seat by the APC leadership in the state, we have no choice but to leave the party for the ADP, where our interest would better be accommodated,” Prince Babayemi stated.
He further stressed that the decision to leave the ruling-APC in the state was not an easy one in view of what he and other members had invested into the party in the state.
In his own address on the occasion, the ADP governorship candidate in the state, Alhaji Moshood Olalekan Adeoti maintained that he decided along with his teeming supporters to leave the APC when all efforts to make the party leadership see the reason to ensure that the spirit of fair play, justice and equity failed.
“Our decision to leave the party was not for any selfish motive.
“We left when the party leadership decided to push the spirit of fair play, justice and equity to the background, once they denied the Osun West Senatorial District of the governorship slot.
“The senatorial district had in the past been the pillar of support to other districts in the past when it was their turn at the governorship slot, only for some individuals to think there are no capable hands in Osun West.
“My ambition is not a do-or-die one. What I am standing for is the Osun West At agenda, but when the APC leadership felt none of the twelve aspirants from the senatorial district was good enough to rule the state.
“It was at this stage we felt the insults being heaped on us collectively were enough,” Alhaji Adeoti emphasised.
While welcoming the defectors into the ADP, the State Chairman of the party, Ola-Toye Akinola stated that the ADP is a home for the Progressives and admonished them to work together with other members of the party to ensure victory at the September 22 governorship election in Osun State.
He further assured the gathering of the party’s victory once the election is free and fair premising his belief on the current level of the electorate’s apathy towards the ruling-APC in the state.
It the event were prominent members of the ADP in the state including former commissioners and council chairmen.
