The Osun State Government will on Monday conduct a plebicite on the proposed creation of additional local council development areas(LCDAs).
The Chairman of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Mr. Segun Oladitan, disclosed this at a press briefing held on Thursday in Osogbo.
He said the conduct of the referendum was consequent upon the instrument of the state House of Assembly and in compliance with the requirement of the 1999 constitution as amended.
Quoting section 8 sub – section 3b, which says ” a proposal for the creation of the local government area is therefore approved in a referendum by at least two third majority of the people of the local government area where the demand for the proposed local government area originated”.
The OSSIEC boss said the exercise would be Yes or No format and would have no political colouration, stressing that it was purely a constitutional requirement in ensuring that governance was brought to the people at the grassroots.
He equally stated that the referendum would be based on Universal Adult Suffrage, calling on those who want to attract development to their areas in Osun State to come out in large numbers and partake in the exercise.
Oladitan therefore appealed to all traditional rulers, opinion leaders to mobilize their subjects to troop out and participate in the exercise so as to attract development to their areas.
He said the commission was prepared to conduct a referendum that would be acceptable to all in the state.
“The Commission is determined to conduct the exercise without hitch by ensuring that the exercise is free and fair and acceptable by all stakeholders”.
He, however, warned staff and ad-hoc staff to be used for the exercise to work conscientiously for the success of the exercise.
He called on the security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and materials to be use for the exercise.
