The annual Osun Osogbo Festival begins in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Monday. The festival, which has been listed by the UNESCO, was a celebration of peace and tranquillity in the land. The festival will kick off with Iwo popo (cleaning of bushes and debris on the road leading to Osun shrine) by the people of the ancient city on Monday while the lighting of the 16-part lamp as well as other activities will also follow.
Speaking at a prelude meeting of the sponsors of the festival, Chief Gabriel Oparanti, the Ajaguna of Osogbo, said the people of the ancient town celebrate Osun festival to pray for peace and tranquillity of the town adding, “we celebrate Osun to pray to the goddess of the river to let the people continue to live in peace and tranquillity.”
He said whatever prayers people offer during the festival are always answered. The Ataoja of Osgbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, Larooye II, prayed for the success of the festival.
The partnering companies for the festival include MTN, Seaman Schinapps, Nigerian Breweries, and Kasapreko, maker of Alomo Bitters.
