OVER 5,000 PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY WINDSTORMS IN 4 STATES *NEMA CAUTIONS AGAINST CLIMATE RELATED DISASTERS

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised Nigerians to take utmost caution against the dynamism of climate related disasters that are evolving in the country which has caused massive windstorms that have destroyed about 600 houses and affected over five thousand persons in the South- west geo-political zone of the country alone this year as well as major fire incident that displaced about 250 secondary school children of Unity Secondary College, Ikire, Osun State.

The Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Iyiola Akande, made the call while assessing the extent of damages caused in various affected communities of Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State where over 200 houses were destroyed by windstorm and about 3,314 persons were affected as well as in Idi Araba town in Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area and Onipanu town in Surulere Local Government Area all in Oyo State where about 100 houses were destroyed and over 800 persons were affected.
Akande urged Nigerians to embark on voluntary tree planting in their premises as preventive measure against major climate change effects in the contemporary world asserting that in the olden days our elders were more conscious about serene environment with trees planting in their compounds even when there was little effects of climate change then but contrary is the case today when there are more damaging effects of global warming.
