Owing to its deprivation of social amenities and age-long marginalisation in the scheme of things, Oke-Ogun, a region in Oyo State, has rejected playing the second fiddle in political participation of the state.
The Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba (Dr.) AbdulGaniy Adekunle Ologunebi Ajinese 1, at the weekend told politicians in Oke Ogun to harmonize their thoughts and ensure they produce the next governor of the state from the region in 2019.
The monarch said this while speaking at the civic reception organized by the Oke Ogun Development Council (ODC) in honour of the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu in Iseyin.
Aseyin who is also the chairman, Conference of Oke Ogun Traditional Rulers, lamented the slow pace of development in
the region, saying the region has been helping other zones in the state to be governors and it is the turn of Oke Ogun to produce the governor of the state so that the region could experience more development.
“You politicians should work together and mobilize people from other regions too to support us, don’t bring anything less than governorship candidate from Oke Ogun to my palace, don’t take deputy position. We all own the state and we also have the right to rule this state just like every other zone,” Oba Adekunle said.
Some leaders of the region including the Asiwaju of Oke Ogun, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, and a former Minister of State for Agriculture, Chief Michael Bamidele Dada, in their separate remarks, said Oke Ogun has the potentials to generate more revenue for the region without relying on the allocations from Abuja.
They, however, tasked the Minister of Communications, Barrister, Shittu, to ensure he prioritizes Oke Ogun development in his
agenda and facilitate other developmental projects that would enhance the advancement of the region.
While responding, the minister commended ODC for the honour done him and pledged not to betray the confidence reposed in him as a minister and eyes of the people of Oke Ogun and the Oyo State Government.
“I think you know me very well. Many of you can define me in term of incorruptibility and performance and I will not disappoint you.”
Barr. Shittu said further that, “we ministers in the government led by President Mohammadu Buhari have passion to serve Nigeria and we are not concerned about material wealth but the zeal to change the nation and the need to move Nigerian forward is our guiding principle.
“I will make sure all the ministers, ministries and agencies involved come to Oke Ogun for assessment and take necessary steps that would hasten and enhance the development of this region.
“I want to task the leaders of Oke Ogun and everybody concerned in the development to set a target through agenda for the
development and place it before the presidency and state government. I will use my links and power as a minister of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria to push it for action and I can assure you by the end of this administration, Oke Ogun would have
experienced overall transformation”.
