The Deputy Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Mohammed Fadeyi has lauded the legislative arm of government in the country for sustaining the nation’s democracy since its emergence in 1999 in Nigeria.
Hon. Fadeyi said this during a lecture he delivered at the Legislative Day of Law Students Association of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti.
According to him, the nation has had a stable democratic dispensation since 1999, saying, the legislative arm has done tremendously well in ensuring good governance in Nigeria.
In his lecture titled, “The Concept of Separation of Powers: The Legislative Experience In Nigeria Since 1999 Till Date, the legislator who represents Ona Ara State Constituency said the function of the legislative arm of government is very important to the progress of a democratic government, adding that the primary responsibility of the legislature is to make laws for government.
“The primary responsibility of the legislative arm is making laws for government, appropriation, oversight on the two other arms of government.”
“The doctrine of separation of power dictates that the three arms of government are independent of each other, hence the separation of power. Each has its responsibilities, the executive arm is saddled with the responsibility of policy formulation and implementation, the legislative arm is saddled with law-making while the judiciary is saddled with interpreting the laws.”
He said some of the problems facing the legislative arm include Financial Autonomy for the state Assembly, undue interference by the executive among others.
