Oyo state government through the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has charged Butchers Association of Nigeria, Oyo state chapter to ensure strict compliance with state government directives to operate mainly at the government-designated centre, Akinyele or face sanctions.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Muyiwa Ojekunle who made this known during a stakeholders meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at the state secretariat, Ibadan stated that it is in the best interest of the public who eat meats on daily basis without knowing the source or the process that produced the meats for consumption.
Hon. Ojekunle stated that the state government is particularly interested in the health sector which is the reason it has made it one of its cardinal agendas.
He added that the government cannot be investing heavily on its people to have a healthy society and fold its arms to watch things go wrong.
He stated that the state has food vendors scattered across the state and it is important to ensure that meat supplies into the society by members of butchers association are produced under the most hygienic condition to guarantee safety of all consumers.
According to him, that it is for this reason Oyo state government has made provision for the central abattoir at Akinyele for the operations of the butchers.
Recall that Oyo state government through the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has been engaging members of the butchers association in the state in a bid to ensure safety of its citizens but a breakaway faction of the association known as Active Butchers has not been forthcoming in term of compliance with government directives which has raised government concerns about proper regulation of the association.
Hon. Ojemuyiwa added that strict compliance to the directive is important as it will among other things help the state government manage data of the market operators in order to block all financial leakages emanating from saboteurs who would not comply with government directives.
The commissioner, however, expressed his delight about the conduct of the butchers association in the state urging the breakaway faction of the association to toe the line of peace and adhere to the directive to move all butchers activities to the central abattoir at Akinyele adding that failure to comply forthwith will leave government with no choice than to sanction all erring operators.
He assured that the state government will continue to prioritize the health and safety of its people adding that it is only a healthy society that can enjoy the physical development been put in place by the state government.
