Oyo: NLC Insists Strike Continues as Otun-Olubadan Lekan Balogun Wades in

By Adeola Oladele, Ibadan

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State Council, has instructed all workers in the state to continue with the strike action embarked upon until the state government was ready to accede to its demands.

This was as a result of the failure on the part of the state government and the leadership of the union to reach a compromise at the Wednesday’s meeting.

In his address to journalists shortly after the congress on Thursday, the state’s chairman of the union, Comrade Waheed Olojede disclosed that the meeting held on Wednesday with the governor was partially successful because certain issues were agreed upon, while there was disagreement on some.

He disclosed further that government has agreed to put on hold, the proposed education policy, until the appointment of a 14-man committee to be saddled with the responsibility of ratifying the recommendations.

The committee, he said, would comprise of seven representatives from each party, excluding chairman that would come from the government side.

Comrade Olojede said further that the leadership of labour insisted on continuation of the on going strike, because of the failure on the part of government to yield to the requests of the union on the payment of all outstanding salaries and pension arrears of workers or at least, three months because of the paucity of fund.

He emphasized that since the government was not ready to yield to their demands, there was no way workers in the state would go back to work without being paid.

Meanwhile, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Lekan Balogun, has waded into the ongoing industrial action between government and the labour union.

He appealed to the state government and the labour union to embrace dialogue in the settlement of the issues at hand.

Lekan Balogun disclosed this during his visit to the NLC Secretariat at Gate as part of his efforts to ensure that the peace being enjoyed in the state was not truncated.
