Oyo Lawmaker, Adisa Recounts gains, success of Afijio football Cup

Weeks after the successful completion of the Seyi Adisa football competition in Afijio local government area of  Oyo state, the gains of the exercise have started yielding result as three of the players who performed well in the competition were recently screened to attend the American College of Football in the United States of America.

In an interview with WESTERN POST, the organizer of the competition Honourable Seyi Adisa who represents Afijio constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly described football as a veritable tool to engage the youths and also promote peace and national development.

He said, “It will interest you to know that we were at the Lekan Salami Sport Stadium with five of them who performed well at the competition  to do trial of which three were  selected and we hope by the grace of God they will make it to the United States.”

The lawmaker said it was amazing seeing the quality of young talents who participated in the competition, adding that sport is a sort of tool that engages the mind, the body and soul for productive living.

He said Nigeria does not a lack of talents but of opportunities, adding that those in power need to learn how to give the young ones the opportunity to showcase what they have.

He added that, “Going to American College of Football in the Unites States will be an opportunity for them to change their lives when they finally get abroad. I have seen their talent, I am so sure they will make it.”

Honourable Adisa said another thing he is looking at before the year ends are in education health and agric sector with a view of  extending the value chain and youth engagement.

He said he is preparing the youths on job seeking to make them employable among others.

“The Afijio cup was an opportunity for us to showcase the talents in my constituency. I believe strongly in the politics of development and I believe for us to develop our community we need to develop our youths and engage them positively. In addition to entrepreneurship, I think  sport is a veritable tool to use.”

It will be recalled that a total of 23 matches were played during the  Intertown competition and at three venues which include, Awe, Ilora and Akinmorin with the first match encounter which took place on August, 12, 2019.

Over 200 youths were directly involved in the tournament tagged Afijio 2019 with a total of  23 matches played across 4-5 weeks, between August and October 2019.
