In preparation for the forthcoming Local Government election slated for February 11, 2017, in Oyo State, work has begun in the newly created 35 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) by the State government.

The State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, had last week directed that staff in the existing 33 local government areas in the state be redeployed to the newly created LCDAs.

Evidence that work has begun in the LCDAs showed when the Joint Committee on LCDAs set up by the governor visited eight among the councils.

The two sub-committees set up by the governor comprise the LCDAs Implementation Committee chaired by the deputy governor, Otunba Moses Adeyemo and the LCDAs Petition Committee which is chaired by Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Seun Abimbola.

The Chief of Staff to Governor Ajimobi, Dr. Gbade Ojo, who led the committee on a tour of eight LCDAs on Friday, said the committee was satisfied that the Local Government Service Commission has complied with the redeployment of workers to the LCDAs, while the workers have also complied.

Ojo, who said election would be held in the new LCDAs, noted that the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), would post its electoral officers to the new 35 LCDAs in preparation for the council poll, adding that between 150 and 200 staff have been posted to each of the 35 LCDAs.

He assured residents that the incumbent administration in the state was serious to conduct the local government election on February 11, this year.

Also part of the monitoring team was the state’s House of Assembly deputy Speaker, Hon. Musah Abdulwasi, who said he was impressed that “the LCDAs are good to go. We found out that people are very eager to have the LCDAs. People and communities have donated acres of land and building for the LCDAs.”

The team that inspected the level of compliance on Ajimobi’s directives include the Majority Leader of the state’s House of Assembly, Hon. Kehinde Subair; Minority Leader, Hon. Lagunju Ojo; Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Bimbo Kolade and Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Mr.  Olaoluwa Olaoye.

The LCDAs visited are Soro at Oke-Isunwin, Oyo; Afijio West at Idi-Igba, Oyo; Inukan at Ajia, Ibadan; Ibadan East at Koloko, Agugu; Ibadan South at Scout Camp, Felele; Ibadan South West at Town Planning, Oluyole; Ibadan West at Aleshinloye and Irepodun at Ijokodo, Ibadan.
