Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has assured journalist in the state of his unwavering support in the discharge of their duties.
The governor gave the assurance at the opening ceremony marking the 2019 press week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council held at the Council, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The governor who was represented by his Deputy Engr. Raufu Olaniyan, at the programme congratulated members and leadership of the council for their success
The governor who commended the leadership and members of the union for their professionalism and courage with which they discharge their duties before, during and after the 2019 elections, described Oyo State as the pacesetter when it comes to journalism in the country, just as he reiterated government commitment to help the Union get to the next level.
He however assured members of the Union that they will continue to enjoy freedom of the press in the state, as they play very important roles in the transformational agenda of the state.
Earlier, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN) guest lecturer at the event who presented a paper with the theme, “Media, Security And Peaceful Coexistence.” Observed. that the ” Media has always performed the functions of informing, educating, enlightening, sensitizing and entertaining the society at large.”
According to him, with the great commitment of the Media, its function and capacity, there is clear evidence that the Media can be a veritable tool used to build our nation, amplify and give effect to objectives of peaceful co existence in the country.
Mr Raji concluded by stressing that ” The Media is a powerful force for good or for evil, the security challenges we face as a country will be surmounted if the Media become a veritable tool in performing a transformative role.
Also speaking at the event Cosmos Oni Zonal President NUJ South West, ” Urge members of the union to tread carefully as they prepare for the next election in the state council, adding that everything will be done constitutionally, while also requesting the state government to consider journalist in the state for further appointment.
In his remarks representative of the Oyo State Commissioner of police, Kehinde Longe commended members of the NUJ Ibadan for their thorough reportage of crime related news, while Oba Bodunrin Ilufemiloye, Are of Ago Are, urged Journalists to be objective and to ensure balance reporting, saying this will promote better Coexistence.
Among dignitaries present at the ceremony include Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun the commissioner for Information, Oyo State, State Commadant Nigeria Civil Defense Corps, Alhaji Iskilu Abiodun Akinsunya, Zonal Director Federal Radio corporation Of Nigeria, Alhaji Mohammed Bello and former NUJ President Lanre Ogundipe and host of others.
