Lagos State House of Assembly has charged Council Chairmen on prompt payment of severance to political office holders before the expiry of their tenure.
The House made the assertion through the Chairman Committee on Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Abdulsobur Olawale Olayiwola, during the committee’s visit to Epe, Eredo and Ikosi Ejirin Local governments.
Olayiwola said “Before now we have given a directive that they should have a sinking fund, where they will be keeping monies for the rainy days,so that at the end of the tenure it will be used to pay the severance.
“The essence of severance package is that all the political office holders will have their monies before the end of the tenure, but reverse is the case.
In Ikosi Ejirin LCDA under the leadership of Mr. Onanuga Shamsideen, the lawmakers commended his administration for putting in place a befitting legislative chamber for the councillors but reprimanded him for been the Chairman of the tender board at the council, a development that is contrary to laid down procedures.
Onanuga, however, promised the lawmakers that he will revert back to status quo as regards the tender board’s policy.
“We were expecting them since they said they are coming whatever we have done so far both on contracts and other things in local government and give them kudos.
“This visit will have a very good impact because if this has been happening before many of the Exco’s and the councillors will know what to do in their local governments.
“This shows us when we are elected as the chairman of the council we really have to take care of the demands of the people.”
In Eredo LCDA, the Council Chairman, Mr Adeniyi Saliu, commended the team adding that he will make amends on the aspects cited by the lawmakers on oversight visit.
“The team have done a very good job, they are thorough, very detailed, paid attention and were very objective about the things they saw on the ground and the assessment of it.
“We feel very happy in the areas we have done well and they commended us,in areas they asked us to look at for me it is an appraisal and I take it very seriously.
“We will not take it for granted and we are going to see it as a call to duty and are going to do a lot more in ensuring the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people of Eredo LCDA.”
Mr. Adedoyin Adesanya, Executive Chairman, Epe Local government was commended by the Committee, for doing due diligence in awarding and execution of contracts as minimal direct labour involvement was observed.
He was also lauded for making provision for a conducive legislative chamber and offices for councillors.
Adedoyin, who appreciated the efforts of the team, said that he was overwhelmed with joy for the visit.
“This we give us an appraisal to know what we are doing, we will know our lapses and how to correct it.
“Here in Epe we don’t have IGR,our allocation is so small and what we expending the monies on is just too much.
“We listen to the public at our quarterly stakeholders meeting to give their demands priority.
Meanwhile, Hon. Rasheed Makinde a member of the committee who spoke with newsmen noted that the severance packages must be paid.
“What we saw here in Epe Local Government is far better, most of their projects are contracted out not necessarily direct labour and they have impact on their localities.
“The issue of severance suppose to be part of the things they should have taken care of since the inception of their administration, but as it is they just have to look for money to put aside for the payment of severance to all the political office holders so that it won’t be a liability to the coming administration”.
