Politicians serving in public office have been admonished to act in accordance with the constitutional provisions guiding election exercise and activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during elections in the country in order to promote the growing democracy of this nation.
The admonition was given by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) standard bearer for Oyo South Senatorial District in the 2019 general election, Chief Bayo Lawal after a brief meeting with party faithfuls in Ibadan.
Chief Lawal explained that only a leveled playing ground during elections in Nigeria without interference from them could promote the nation’s democracy, adding that influence and interference from these powerful politicians often undermine the integrity of the exercise.
According to him, when they interfere into the activities of INEC during elections, the integrity of the exercise would have been undermined before the people.
“An example should be taken from former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan who during and after the conduct of the 2015 election, did not interfere or influence in the exercise saddled by INEC but willingly relinquished power to the the winner, a development which promoted the image and integrity of Nigeria before the whole world.
“If these politicians could emulate this laudable leadership style, the country will be better for it,” he added.
Assessing the performance of the senate, Chief Lawal who clinched the Oyo South senatorial ticket by defeating former deputy governor of Oyo State, Chief Azeem Gbolarumi at a primary in Ibadan lauded members of the red chamber since the inception of this administration adding that there are still other areas which need adjustment by them to make the senate perform better.
While calling for total seperation of powers between the executive and the legislative arm of governments, chief Lawal urged the senate to intensify effort at making more laws that would have direct positive impacts in the life of Nigerians.
Commenting on the fate of the PDP in the 2019 elections, Chief Lawal expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious at all levels, adding that the people of Oyo State have shown their interest and acceptance in his candidacy for Senate, that of Engineer Seyi Makinde for Oyo governor and the Atiku Abubarka, peter Obi ticket for president in 2019.
Chief Lawal who assured people of his senatorial district of prompt delivery of dividends of democracy when he emerges winner at the poll called for their cooperation and support now and after the elections.”I will ensure that they are practically empowered through my contributions at the senate. I will also work on laws and bills that will have direct positive impacts on the lives of my people”.
