PDP Convention: Ex-Senate President Ayu Anointed Chair, Arapaja Defeats Oyinlola

By 12 midnight Saturday, the National Convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party was still in progress at Eagle Square, Abuja with a large army of delegates moving to cast their votes.

Former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu from Benue State in the North-Central had earlier been coronated as new chairman having emerged by consensus, just like most of the other national officers.

Only three offices were contested namely the Deputy National Chairman, South-west, National Youth Leader and National Auditor over which there was no consensus.

Contesting for the position of Deputy Chairman, South were former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and former deputy governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja.

Around 12.45 pm, the Chairman of the convention and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri declared voting for the three positions closed.

Sources said Arapaja, whose candidature is being powered by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and supported by most of the governors of the party, may likely clinch the position of Deputy National Chairman, South.

Virtually all the party’s governors attended the convention which had been preceded by uncertainty created by the case instituted by former Chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus.

When the convention opened earlier in the day, Governor Fintiri, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Sokoto State Governor,  Aminu Tambuwal, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, among others addressed the convention.

The new Chairman of the party, former Senate President Ayu also spoke.

All the new officers of the party will assume office on December 9, 2021.

The coast had been clear for the convention to hold by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja following the dismissal of the challenge mounted against the congress by the suspended chairman of the party, Secondus.
