PDP Fixes New National Convention for August 17

There were indications on Thursday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have resolved its leadership crisis which had polarised the party into two factions-one controlled by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee and the other led by embattled former Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

The party leaders have been meeting on the crisis since early on Thursday. In attendance at the meeting were the party’s governors, members of its Board of Trustees, Senator Makarfi and his Caretaker Committee members as well as Senator Sheriff.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting on Thursday evening, Makarfi said the crisis had been resolved and that a new nation convention would hold on August 17 to elect new national executives of the party.

The Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Alhaji Jubril Walid, also corroborated Makarfi, saying Sheriff himself would come and meet the media to state the same position.

He said special committees have been set up to cement the agreements reached and that in the next two weeks there wont be anything called crisis in PDP again.

He said the party leaders had been meeting with Sheriff since Wednesday and that the issue had been resolved.

But Sheriff is yet to speak on the alleged resolution of the crisis.
