Following heightened political power play that saw Gov. Rotimi Amaechi dominate headlines for 2 years, the Peoples Democratic Party has finally repossessed its mandate from the All Progressives Congress in the oil-rich Rivers State, a development that is expected to give the party a lasting moment of respect as it adjust to a tasking reality of opposition politics.
Mr. Nyesom Wike, a former Minister of Education and ardent supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, was finally declared winner of the gubernatorial election in the tumultuous Rivers State, in a landslide victory that saw him thumping his APC challenger by a margin of close to 1 million votes.
INEC announced that Mr. Wike scored 1,029,102 votes, while Dakuku Peterside of the APC managed to score 124,896 in the Saturday guber election.
Widespread irregularities have been reported to have marred the poll conduct in the state, as observers call for outright cancellation, but INEC said believed those weren’t enough ground to cancel the statewide poll.
