The Joint National Association of People with Disability in the state of Osun has called for speedy passage of the bill which would protect and provide special consideration for people living with disability in the area of welfare.
The president of the association, Mr.n Kehinde Onitiju who spoke at an engagement meeting with the Special Adviser to Governor on Civic Engagement, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye commended the state government for initiating the protection bill through the former lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency, Oyintiloye during the sixth Assembly.
Onitiju who commended the seventh Assembly for revisiting the bill, urged the lawmakers to fast track the passage of the bill, and equally appealed to the Governor to assent the bill as that would also reinforce his commitment to the welfare of their community cluster.
While underscoring the process of teachers recruitment in the state, he equally urged the government to give special consideration to the people living with disability, accentuating that there is an umpteenth number of professionals, experts and people of competencies in any given sphere of life within them.
“It is on record that people with disability have been doing wonderfully well in series of academic and intellectual exercises which make us to be fit to take up any responsibility assigned to us towards the development of the state.
“This is why we are also making a passionate appeal for special recognition in the government by granting us adequate representation through which our pressing needs would be well channeled”, he added.
He equally commended the administration of Governor Oyetola in the state for being magnanimous in dealing with people with disability by giving them special treatment in his administration in range of areas which has immensely rekindled their hope as legitimate members of the society.
Speaking at the meeting, Oyintiloye while appreciateing them for acknowledging the performance of the Governor in all the sectors of the state, especially people general wellbeing reiterated that they are important stakeholders in the government, noting that government has placed values on them as a body which can’t be taken with contempt.
He further assured them that the government will continue the partnership that will yield good service delivery which would amplify democratic tendencies in the state.
Oyintiloye while remarking on the essence of the Protection Bill which the state Assembly is considering, said he initiated the Special People’s Bill in the sixth Assembly because it was in tandem with the Convention on the Rights of Persons and Disabilities as an international human rights treaty of the United Nations which is intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
“When we secure the rights of persons with disabilities in our community, we move our world closer to upholding the core values and principles of United Nations Charter”, he said.
