Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspected Fulani herdsman, identified as Salisu Sulaiman for allegedly attempting to abduct some residents of the state.
The spokesperson of the Police, Mrs Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the arrest on Wednesday said Sulaiman aged 18, hails from Ifofihan in Kwara State.
Opalola said the suspect was arrested around 12:15pm on Tuesday adding that, manhunt continued to arrest other fleeing suspects.
Sulaiman and other fleeing members of his gang had on Sunday invaded Koka community in Obokun Local Government Area of the State at night and made efforts to kidnap the residents.
The gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen by the villagers, were said to have stormed the community around 11:00pm and started shooting sporadically.
The gunmen, numbering 8, were said to have arrived the community, ordered residents to march out of their houses while leading them towards the bush in the locality, one of them veered off the line, unknown to the gunmen and put a telephone call to the Hunters Group of Nigeria in the state.
Opalola disclosed that some hunters and villagers mobilised themselves and engaged the suspected Fulani herdsmen in gun duel before their freedom.
According to her, “Some hoodlums suspected to be herdsmen attacked Koka village in Obokun Local Government Area and attempted to abduct some villagers. Consequently, villagers and hunters mobilised and engaged the hoodlums in a firefight and liberated themselves.
“Three villagers and hunters sustained bullet wounds during the rescue operation. Victims are responding to treatment at Asubiaro State Hospital in Osogbo. Police drafted officers to join the locals in search of the fleeing gunmen,” Opalola said.
