Oyo State Police Command on Wednesday paraded 9 cultists in Ibadan, the state capital.
Briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele Ibadan, the State Police Commissioner, Ngozi Onadeko said: “In an attempt to rid Oyo State of crimes, the DPO of Atiba Division, upon information he received that some cultists were gathering to do their handing over and also to do initiation of some new members, swung into action and nine of the cultists were arrested.
“The cultists after thorough interrogation confessed to the crime, while others confessed that they are all members of Eye Confraternity. Some of them are going for initiation while some of them are going to hand over to the new leaders.
“I will continue to admonish parents and guardians to talk to their wards, and children, they should know what they are doing.
“Like those ones arrested now, their parents thought they were in school, not knowing they were out to do contrary things. You can see what they have ended up doing.”
The Police boss revealed that weapons recovered from the cultists included locally made gun, machetes, among others, adding that, at times some of the cultists also engaged in an armed robbery.
Speaking with newsmen, one of the suspects, Ayinde Badmus, 23 years old, said: I was in Oyo town to visit my friend, but I didn’t know they were having handover overnight.
“I just went there to visit my friends, I’m a student of The Polytechnic Ibadan.
“I didn’t know my friend is among those cultists. As we were together talking, Amotekun officers burst in and arrested us.
“The locally-made gun that was recovered from me belongs to my friend that is currently at large, but the gun was found beside me, because we were talking and the gun was placed beside me before the sudden arrival of Amotekun officers.”
