The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has issued a query to the owner of BVER, the private hostel where Heritage Ajibola, a 200 level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, died on Wednesday.
In a statement issued on Friday, and sent to Western Post by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the management said there were allegations that the soakaway where Ajibola fell into was not properly covered.
The management while describing the incident as tragic, devastating, unfortunate and unacceptable said it is awaiting a response to a query served to the owner of the hostel.
Meanwhile, the institution said the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Command of the Nigerian Police has taken over the investigation of the circumstances that led to the death.
“It must be noted that all the hostels in the students village are privately owned and they are not under the control of the university.
“The university management presently has only oversight functions on these private hostels,” the statement added.
