A violent protest erupted in Ede, Osun state at the weekend as students of the Federal Polytechnic Ede threw caution into the wind when a lorry crushed a student of the institution, Tawakalitu to death.
An eyewitness account told Western Post correspondent that the students of the institution were angry over the death of one of them and subsequently embarked on a protest during which they set the lorry ablaze, causing tension in the town.
Tawakalit, a HND1 Accounting student, it was learnt, was on a motorcycle when the lorry hit her along with the motorcycle rider.
Calm was however restored with the intervention of police, soldiers and other security agencies.
Police Public Relation Officer for Osun Command, DSP Folasade Odoro confirmed the incident and urged people of the town to go about their normal business as peace as returned to the town.
The Polytechnic Ede had opted out of the ongoing nationwide strike by polytechnic lecturers to allow its students complete the 2012/2013 session.
The school will continue with the strike on Wednesday after completing its ongoing second semester examinations Tuesday.
