Poor Funding of 3SC Football Club Worries Oyo Lawmaker

By: Adeola Oladele, Ibadan
As the Shooting Stars Football Club (3SC), popularly known as the “Oluwole Warriors,” is heading towards relegation with its current 17th position in the Nigerian Professional League table, a call has gone to the Oyo State Government to urgently release a take-off grant for the team in order to meet up with its financial obligations in the build up for the 2nd league stanza that will begin in May 21, 2017.
The worrisome situation informed a member of the state’s House of Assembly, Hon. Fatai Adesina to raise a motion for an urgent financial assistance to 3SC in order to save it from an impending relegation during the Assembly plenary.
The lawmaker observed that poor financial assistance to the club had been its problem over the years, adding that football management and running should not be likened to the payment of salaries, which he pointed out, was still outstanding in the state since December, 2016.
The usual take-off grant which he said, other past governments in the state had been grating the club, has not been granted by the current administration till date, which according to him, was affecting the performance of the team.
“They are finding it difficult to sign quality players and pay their winning bonus as and when due. The welfare of the players is sine qua non to their performance,” adding that there was the need for all hands to be on deck to prevent the club from relegation starring it in the face.
“The state government must ensure the release of quarterly funds on the first line charge basis as against releasing monthly funds when salaries are being paid,” he added.
Adesina equally admonished the Assembly leadership to meet with the executive arm to ensure the implementation of his resolution, noting that the club must not be allowed to sink in the relegation water.
